Project Management An Effective Project Manager Essay

Introduction Project management and IT have always been something of an interest of mine. Growing up I’ve always liked to learn more about computers and studying MIS in my undergraduate led me to love a career in information technology. As I started my career I worked in a software company as a technical support representative then I moved on to the health and welfare industry where I worked as a business analyst and then moved to a project manager position. I realized from my career that project management is very important and is a must have ‘skill’ in one’s tool box. In my short career I’ve seen good project managers and some OK project managers including my own experience. In this term project report I want to explore and share my own view point on several important topic in IT project management. I believe in order to be an effective project manager in any industry, you have to be equipped with several things. I want to discuss several important topic s such as quality management, human resource management, and communication management. These are the topics that I think are very important in one’s tool box and will be essential to be successful. In my limited career as a project manager I did not have any formal training or a PMP but I would think these skills are covered in a PMP certificate and others will benefit from these skills. Other than speaking about my own experience in these topics, I’ve read the text book in order to learn more about theseShow MoreRelatedEffective Management And Leadership For Project Managers Essay1567 Words   |  7 PagesMany observers of architectural, engineering, and facilities management organizations have noted how little planning designers undertake for their own benefit. The Physics Of Space Flight - 1387 Words

Manned space missions to other planets, and even interstellar travel, has been the subject of countless books, movies and television shows, beginning in 1865 with Jules Verne’s book â€Å"From the Earth to the Moon†, where a man named Impey Barbicane makes a cannon large enough to fire a hollow bullet to the moon, one of the first attempts to depict a feasible propulsion, and is still considered the most realistic theory before 1900s. But space flight is no longer fiction, as Yuri Gagarin proved in 1961, and the technology allowing these advances is now even closer than ever, as the first manned flight for mars is scheduled for 2030. However, there are still major limitations to these kinds of space flight, and we still have to solve these problems before we attempt to leave Earth’s orbit. The first is Propulsion, as the current rocket fuel is far too heavy, and costs too much, to use it for anything other than trips to the moon and back. Second, is communication , as the craft will need to retain communication with Earth, as the current system has too much of a delay. Third, are the detrimental effects of gravity on bone mass. Forth, is artificial hibernation, necessary for interstellar travel. Fifth, is the deadly radiation of outerspace. Lastly, are supplies like food, water, and air. All these problems need to be solved before attempting to ever leave Earth orbit and enter Space. Propulsion is a major limitation to space exploration, because of its expense and weight.Show MoreRelatedNational Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)652 Words   |  3 PagesFor over fifty years, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA, has studied the outer space and how to get there. Coles And Woolworths Price Wars Supermarket-Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Coles And Woolworths Price Wars Supermarket? Answer: Introduction The article Price war odds rise as Woolworths outpaces Coles on 3rd May 2017 by Sue Mitchell talks about the price war in Australian supermarket industry. The efforts by Australias leading supermarkets, that is, Woolworths and Coles to boost their market share have culminated in a price war. Coles is responding to the price cuts by Woolworths to avoid losing its market share. For example, Coles has reduced the price of 34 San Remo pasta goods by between 20 and 25% and also slashed that of chocolate chip cookies by 25%(Mitchell, 2017). According to the managing director of Coles, John Durkan, the company is prepared to cut prices to retain its market share. His company was going to invest in low price plans to make sure that the price cuts are accomplished. The battle between Coles and Woolworths is of interest to the clients, suppliers and the analyst groups. The customers are keen to benefit from this competition by getting the products at lower prices than before. On their part, the suppliers are receiving pressure from supermarkets such as Coles to refrain from seeking price rises. Moreover, the analysts from different companies such as Citigroup and MacquarieEquities are providing their predictions about the current situation in Australias supermarket sector. Economic Analysis Number of Firms in the Market Australias supermarket industry is made up of a few businesses such as Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Aldi. Although there are a few companies in the marketing, the industry is dominated by two major supermarkets, that is, Coles and Woolworths. Woolworths occupies approximately 35.7% of the market share while that of Coles is nearly 33.2%. Other firms hold a small portion of the market share. This scenario depicts that the Australias supermarket industry falls under the type of imperfect competition referred to as oligopoly market structure. Chart 1: Source: Business Insider Price Wars Another important feature of oligopoly market structure evident in Australias supermarket sector is competition and price wars. This type of oligopoly is commonly referred to as competitive oligopoly. In oligopoly market, the behaviors of one company instantly impact the rival companies. As a result, every business is often cautious and maintains a close watch over the actions of competitors to have a counter-action when needed. In Australias supermarket sector, there is constant rivalry especially between Coles and Woolworths in retaining their customer base. When Woolworths slashes the prices of its products, it draws the clients of Coles. In response, Coles also reduces the prices and in some instances by larger margin compared to Woolworths to have its customers back(Mitchell, 2017). In fact, the competition is sometimes tight to the extent that these companies are willing to forfeit profit expansion to improve their sales and protect their market portion. Advertising Oligopolistic firms are known to make use of adverts to reach new clients as well as maintain the existing customer base. Indeed, advertisement intensifies competition among enterprises in the oligopoly market structure. If a company fails to advertise while others are advertising, then such company is likely to lose customers. In Australia, supermarkets, particularly, Woolworths, Coles, and Aldi use a significant amount of funds for advertising. In their advertisements, they use channels such as magazines, metropolitan radio, regional television, and direct mail. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, supermarkets in Australia spent approximately 200 U.S Dollars on advertisements in 2015/2016 trading period with Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi spending the highest(Heffernan, 2016). Barriers to Market Entry The existence of a few firms in Australias supermarket industry is clear evidence that there are significant obstacles to market entry. Some of the impediments to potential entrants result from the actions of Woolworths and Coles. For instance, the price wars between Coles and Woolworths that often culminates in price cutting makes it hard for a new entrant to operate profitably. Moreover, these companies enjoy significant economies of scale and hence have an advantage in the market. Evaluation of Australias Supermarket Sector Advantages The firms in this industry are paying close attention to the actions of the competitors. As a result, these companies have adopted a highly competitive practice which is benefiting the consumers. The clients are now in a position to obtain products at a lower price due to the price wars. Moreover, these firms are continually improving the quality of their products and service a scenario which benefits the consumers. Weaknesses The existing companies in Australias supermarket sector have intensified barriers to market entry. The hurdles lock out potential market entrants and hence denying the consumers the benefits of many firms in the industry such as stable prices and improved quality. Furthermore, the companies in this sector are allocative and productively inefficient. Graph 1: Allocative and Productive inefficiencies Quantity Allocative efficiency takes place when the price equals the marginal cost(Sloman et al., 2015). However, in this industry, the price exceeds the marginal and thus allocative inefficiency. Moreover, these companies are productively inefficient as they do not produce at the minimum point of the average cost curve. On the graph one above, 0A shows the efficient allocative output while 0P the productively efficient production. These productions levels are not attained in oligopoly market structure and hence inefficiencies. Recommendations Information is essential for the better operation of any market. Therefore, there is a need for the competition commission of Australia to avail fair, timely and adequate information to both producers and consumers to boost competition. Moreover, oligopolies sometimes resort to collusive arrangements and thus killing competition. The government should closely monitor the behaviors of firms in this industry to reduce or eliminate the chances of collusion as such arrangement will lead to the suffering of consumers due to high prices and poor quality. Conclusion Australian supermarket sector is made up of a few firms. Two companies, that is, Woolworths and Coles, dominate the market, and their behaviors have a significant impact on the entire industry. The economies of scale gained by the two key players have intensified barriers to potential market entrants. There is a need for the competition commission to enhance information in this industry and to monitor these companies closely to eliminate the possibilities of collusion. A Review of A Midsummer Nights Dream essays

A Review of A Midsummer Nights Dream essays A Midsummer Nights Dream is an excellent, humorous play written by Shakespeare. It is highly characteristic of Shakespeare, bringing several subplots into one masterful story. I have seen this play presented in a classical format and I found it thoroughly entertaining. Directed by Robin McKee, UNLs March 27th performance of Shakespeares comedy was most definitely entertaining, but not because it was well done. I found the drama laughable, though the comedy did not come from Shakespeares clever writings. In fact, the presentation of this play seemed to ignore much of the scripts original wit and focused completely on a ludicrous setting. By setting the classical piece in the sixties, the audiences attention was diverted from the quality of the dramas phrasing. On top of these atrocities, the theme was inconsistent. Numerous drugs were consumed onstage, illustrating a sixties motif, but characters seemed to be dressed in either fifties drag with poodle skirts or they portrayed the discoing seventies in polyester suits. The idea of presenting this play in a setting more familiar to our generation was clever and introduced several new interpretations. For example, when the band of stoned actors are chased by beasts of the woods, their plight is intensified by the knowledge that they are extremely prone to paranoia due to the drugs they have been stoking all day. When one of the actors is turned into a donkey, there seems to be a fine line between reality and fantasy, a common problem accompanying drug use. These added touches do supply ample humor, though I noticed that the viewer who laughed in these instances seemed to identify a little to well. Finally, I felt that the acting in this play was marginal at best. While I enjoyed some of the characters, the strained verse of others became wearing. It is acceptable to change the environment of a play in o...

Jazz History-2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Jazz History-2 - Essay Example Finally, in the post-War era, jazz had become an art form and not simply an instrument of low/pop culture. However, bebop was too abstract and improvised for many not only in the 1950s but also today. Some forms of jazz still have popular appeal, despite the near 60 years that have passed since their recording. Cool jazz is one of few jazz movements that retain popular appeal even today; its enduring quality seems to be in the perfect mean it finds between the artfulness of bebop and the catchiness of pre-War Swing jazz. Cool jazz is said to have begun during the Second World War, during which predominantly white Californian jazz musicians migrated to New York City, where they integrated with bebop styles being played in the clubs such as Milton’s Playhouse. Many of these musicians were trained and educated in formal schools. The Californian styles tended to mediate the sharp edges of traditional bebop, and created a new fusion of approaches to arrangements in the jazz composition. Bringing back this emphasis on arrangements harkened back to the old days of Swing jazz (Giola 51), when big bands required knowledge of the song’s form across the different instrument sections. Although cool jazz did not reintroduce the concept of the big band to the mainstream, what it did do was reemphasize the need for consistent instrumentation across performances, and lessening the need for elaborate improvisations. But nailing down a definition of Cool jazz, and jazz in general, seems to be a futile practice. As Ted Giola writes, â€Å"Jazz writers learned long ago, for example, that it is almost impossible to come up with a good, succinct, widely accepted definition of jazz itself† (Giola 360). Coming up with definitions, that is, is a waste of time because art grows organically through changes in its shape and texture, independent of critics’ generalizations. Because it

Are silver dressings helping in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers Essay

Are silver dressings helping in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers - Essay Example In spite of the progress made over the decades in the understanding and treatment of these complex chronic wounds, most wounds do not respond to conventional treatments. Silver has been used for centuries in the treatment of wounds. The antimicrobial properties of silver are well documented since ancient times. Even as early as 750AD, silver vessels were used to store water in recognition of silver’s medicinal properties. Crede is credited for producing the first scientific papers in 1881, on the use of silver for preventing eye infection in neonates. In 1965, Moyer et al reported on the antibacterial action of 0.5% silver nitrate compresses applied to extensive burns (Maillard, 2006). Commonly used vehicles for delivery of silver include foams, alginates, films, sheets and hydrocolloids. In addition, a number of technologies like silver salts, absorbed ionic silver (in silver charcoal metallic silver products), and nanocrystalline silver coatings (silver vapour sprayed onto the backings of dressing materials) are available that are capable of releasing varying concentrations of silver cations to wounds (Maillard, 2006). The increased prevalence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has resulted in advances in impregnation techniques and polymer technologies. A variety of silver-based dressings, varying in their structure, formulation and concentration of silver are now available. These dressings are designed to improve healing by reducing or controlling the wound bioburden (Maillard, 2006) Since diabetic foot ulcers are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, it becomes imperative to use an ideal antimicrobial dressing, which also takes into account the increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The aim of this study is to review literature for evidence regarding the use of various silver-based dressings and their efficacy in diabetic foot ulcers. Original articles

Effects of Globalization on Quality of Life

Effects of Globalization on Quality of Life The globalization phenomenon is seen as the world-wide movement to bring different countries and societies together, allowing for greater integration and contact. Products, ideas, transactions and information are now able to circulate more freely. Consequently, this results in a global society of similar standards, where faster communication between societies would mean rapid improvements in the global economy and living standards as a whole. 1.1 The Advantages of Globalization Clear advantages resulting from globalization are the more efficient exchange of ideas and information between people and societies. Key knowledge and information in areas of science and technology can be shared more quickly, allowing for the development of new products and solutions to help us improve our daily lives. Much improvement can also be seen in the global economy due to the greater ease in financial transactions and free trade agreements between countries. In addition, more jobs are created due to the greater ease for countries to invest in the developing nations. 1.2 The Disadvantages of Globalization However, there are the downsides of globalization as well. Homogeneity and standardization are often seen, leaving little difference in the individual societies. Unique cultures of the individual societies are starting to erode as nations strive for progress and advancement to fit in with the rest of the world. One example is the traditions of the Masai tribe in Africa, which have been scrutinized and abolished by outsiders, is now lost due to globalized intruders of the land. Developing countries are also in the risk of losing their cultural identity as they tend to embrace the influx of ideas and information with open arms, and in turn, neglecting culture heritage and traditions. An increase in consumerism and number of activities has also taken a toll on the environment shown by the dramatic increase in pollution levels and climate change. Stress levels are also on the rise with the greater competition among people and societies as noted by urban Sociologist Georg Simmel in his book On Individuality and social form. 2. Impact Globalization has on Tourism The tourism industry, being an important sector in the global economy is also affected by the increasingly intense waves of globalization. It has brought about both positive and negative outcomes and effects. 2.2  Advantages of Globalization on Tourism One obvious advantage of globalization on the tourism sector is the increase in the number of travelers. As people become more aware of their surrounding countries and the different society out there, curiosity for the places would be sparked. Fueled by financial and social improvements, peoples disposable income would increase, allowing them to travel more than before. The increase in the number of people travelling brings with them a demand for hotels, and at the same time opening up more job vacancies and boosting the countrys economy. 2.2 Disadvantages of Globalization on Tourism On the other hand, there are also disadvantaged of globalization on the hospitality sector. Due to the increasing demand in travelling accommodations, hotels are springing up all around, especially in the heart of the city where tourists would frequent. Such places are usually busy and noisy, with a similar surrounding environment as they have back home, which is not ideal as people go on holiday to get away from their hectic lifestyle and schedule. The busy setting decreases the quality of relaxation as tourists would not be truly able to let loose and relax. Therefore, there is a need for guests to be in a different environmental setting for them to truly relax. 2.2 How Globalization have affected Design in General Globalization has affected design in many different ways; from skyscrapers, shopping malls, franchised restaurants and banks are coming to a standardized structure and design. Professor Roger K. Lewis posed a question on his paper Architecture and the Global City whether When abroad, how often have you felt especially comfortable in a hotel room similar to others you have stayed in, felt relieved perusing a menu with foods you recognize, or enjoyed shopping in a store whose merchandise and interior design are like the store at home? 2.2 .1 How Globalization have affected Design in Hotel Design The notion of luxury also evolved, from the simplistic mindset of material possession and wealth, to the psychological and spiritual aspect of life. Time and experience are now seen as prized commodities. With the rapid reduction in space and land available, micro-hotels such as the capsule hotels are gaining popularity. Though capsule hotels are small in size, they serve the main purpose and function of temporary accommodation space: a space for sleeping. The limited available space is not only efficiently used; functional comfort is also taken into consideration. Convenience in location is also an important part of the capsule hotel, where it is located mainly in busy city area. Such hotels are popular among businessmen and tourists, who are looking for a cheap place to rest for the night. The increased traffic in the cluttered and noisy urban jungle has also led to the revival of spaces for retreat from the chaotic urban setting. As global competition among people and industries increases, people are spending more time working. This result in higher stress levels and lesser leisure time for relaxation and entertainment. High levels of pollution in terms of noise and environment are also the reason why the demands of such escape are increasing. Retreats are situated away from urbanization, where relaxation and serenity are prized characteristics. Another growing trend is the eco-friendly hotels and resorts. In mind of the rising environmental issues and concerns, these hotels aim for earth-friendly solutions to the different problems faced, without sacrificing luxury and comfort. One common approach that is adopted by hotels is the use of non-toxic cleaning agents, recycling of waste from both staff and guests and the use of renewable energy. 3. Uniqueness amidst Standardization Boutique hotels in general, aim to be unique and different setting themselves apart from the bigger, main stream hotels. Being in a much smaller scale of 3 to 50 guest rooms, boutique hotels are known for their personalized treatment of individual guests. Ultimately, boutique hotels aim to design for distinctiveness and diversity. What makes the boutique hotel more ideal is that it is close to the heart of the city, yet away from the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle. The concept for the boutique hotel is to provide an escape for people from the busy urbanized setting of everyday life.   The chosen site in the Minden Cluster of Tanglin Village fits with my concept as the surrounding environment is tranquil and peaceful, different from the cluttered urban setting which most hotels are located in, yet still close to the shopping district at Orchard Road. The process of cleansing ones mind and soul is used in the design approach of my boutique hotel. From the noisy, busy city, one goes through a cleansing process of walking through the space to reach the ultimate destination of a quiet haven. 3.1  Cleansing of the mind and soul It starts off in the lobby area whereby public areas such as the reception and dining areas are located close to the road where the traffic is, and private areas such as the room are placed furthest away from the road, where it is quieter. At the pool area from the lobby, one goes through a transition area to calm their minds and filter out distractions and stress resulting from the cluttered urban city. Ultimately, one reaches an area of peace and serenity; the rooms. It is a private haven for the individual guests, an area which is quiet and relaxed, free from distractions and the prying eyes of the public sector. Water is used as the main element in my design as it brings about a calming effect and rejuvenation of the spirit. Water features are also used as partitions to enhance the feeling of being surrounded in an oasis. This will provide tourists with a place where they can truly relax and unwind from their daily activities. 3.2 Luxurious comfort The layout of spaces is not aimed at solely to maximize profits, but more towards the wellbeing of the guests. Wide pathways and minimal furniture are purposefully allocated for the guests to maximize the comfort levels of the visitors. The use of space in the lobby is slightly different where spiritual calmness of the guests is translated in terms of enclosed areas with high ceiling, and the play of light and water elements. 3.3 Relaxation The term relaxing space comes in many different forms and differs with each person. They can be in the form of an enclosed space with high ceiling, like those found in churches, or simply being outdoors, close to nature. These are the different kinds of relaxing spaces that are integrated in the boutique hotel design. Being located at the back of the site, away from prying eyes of the public, the use of nature and outdoors is implemented in the private area where the rooms are. The rooms are designed in blocks, differing from the original architecture of the lobby block, so as to allow for more efficient cross ventilation of spaces. With the use of plants as soft boundaries, constant fresh air can be expected when staying the rooms, ensuring comfort for the staying guests. 5. Conclusion The question to ask is does globalization really improve our quality of life? Advancing technology may have provided us with products and services to ease our problems in life, but globalization have also brought about different kinds of problems, such as the increase in stress level with the ever increasing fast-paced lifestyles of people. Increase in human activities and demands have also cause a strain on the environment with the worsening pollution and a change in the ecological system, along with a greater increase in stress level in people. Fast-paced lifestyles are seen all around the world, even when people are on holidays and being surrounded by similar hectic environments. So, have globalization then improve our life quality?

Richard III and Adolf Hitler :: Richard II Richard III Essays

Richard III and Adolf Hitler      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In William Shakespeare's Richard III, we see Shakespeare's interpretation of despot rule and the parallels that stem from this interpretation.   The character type of Richard has been examined and marveled for thousands of years.   From Plato's examination of despot rule in the Republic, we see the motives of what drives despot rulers.   A look at the background of Richard and how his upbringing and personal life contributed to his insecurities will help to understand why someone may become a despot.   The comparison of Adolf Hitler to that of Richard, shown by the modern motion picture Richard III, will show the rapid rise and fall of the despot and the reality of totalitarian rule.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Plato's Republic, a fascinating look at the comparison of the just soul and the unjust soul, allows one to see the philosophical motives behind despot rule.   Despot rulers are simply driven by fear.   Their anxieties and insecurities lead to a hatred that has a desire to destroy, deep-rooted in violence.   Despot rulers are also never satisfied with the power they have at any given time, thus exposing their constant fear of retaliation from their subjects.   This examination of the despot ruler by Plato clearly shows the motives by which despot rulers rule, but it fails to explain why and how these motives originate in the human mind.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In order to comprehend why such a high level of fear and insecurity can be brought about, a look at the upbringing and personal life of Richard should be brought into discussion.   One of three brothers, Richard was in constant competition of who would succeed in gaining the throne of England.  Ã‚   Richard, like his other brothers, wanted the title of king quite badly, but as time pressed on it seemed less likely that Richard would succeed in gaining the throne.   His shrewd attitude and a physical deformity, that left him nearly paralyzed, were two of the many reasons why Richard would be kept of the throne.   Richard quickly became aware of this and he therefore began his rampage to insure himself the throne.   After killing off his brothers and many others, who were eligible to succeed, Richard finally became King of England.

Baseball and Boxing from Pre-modern to Modern

Baseball and boxing make up a very large portion of the American sports culture, and for more than 100 years have developed into the professional, nationwide and international games that we can see on television today. In the 1870’s baseball started to be acknowledged as America’s national sport, however boxing enjoyed a similar popularity and both of these sports have changed from small-time amateur pastimes into televised, professional league sports that bring in millions of dollars each year and pay their athletes considerable amounts of money to keep on playing. While both baseball and boxing may now, and always have, attracted a different sort of crowd, they have both nevertheless developed along very similar lines. In 1869 the Cincinnati Red Stockings were formed; the team was the very first professional baseball team and it went undefeated that first year after being challenged by many amateur teams (Goldstein, 1989, p. 70).Over the subsequent years (more than a c entury) since the inception of the National League and the American League, two factors of the game have changed significantly: the integration of ethnic minorities into the major Leagues and the fact the game itself has become less violent than it was in its earlier years. In the 1890’s, the segregation of black and white baseball teams began, following an initial period of integration that was very short-lived (White, 1995, p. 140). The Negro Leagues incorporated several different non-white leagues into one general ‘outsider’ structure of teams that were comprised predominantly of black players.Other ethnic minorities would have been relegated to these leagues instead of joining the National or American Leagues, which were solely comprised of white, male players. In 1945, after a huge push from many people within professional baseball that echoed the sentiments of an anti-racist American population, black baseball player Jackie Robinson was signed to the Montre al Royals and in a few short years the Negro Leagues would disband due to full integration. The early baseball players were not only taking part in a segregationist sport, they were also playing the game with much more violence than they are today. They tried harder to steal bases and to score runs than experts feel today’s players do; where once it was not uncommon for runners to physically interject when the basemen tried to catch a throw, now base runners will simply run to their base and let the field and basemen do their jobs. It is fair to say that the game has mellowed. Boxing has exhibited great similarity to the development of baseball in America, albeit an entirely different sport. Where baseball is a team game dependent on specific rules of play, boxing emerged as a sport totally dependent on the strength and will of one man to simply overpower another in a direct fist-fight.Bare-knuckle boxing is the ancestor of today’s boxing, a sport that is blatantly viol ent however in comparison to some of the fights that took place in the 19th century. Boxing in its infancy was carried to America by British settlers and has forever secured a place in the hearts of many sport enthusiasts in modern day. This is another sport that has become decidedly less violent and which has also seen its participators overcome the segregation that was rampant in early American society (Gorn, 1986, p. 128).In place of very strict guidelines where whites and blacks must not engage each other in sport, like in the baseball leagues, it was more common for mixed fighting to occur in boxing. The crowds could be massive at any event, and often the pitting of a white champion against a black one would draw even more attention to the point where thousands of would-be spectators were turned away. This was a sport in which black athletes could really carve a niche for themselves and, while constantly facing discrimination like any other minority at the time, a boxer could l iterally fight his way out of racial oppression.Bare-knuckle boxing is not extinct, however professional boxers are required to wear gloves that will not only protect their hands but their opponents as well. The sport is not as bloody and less of its participants will leave the ring with broken bones, however there can be no doubt that boxing is still a very primal, violent sport. Superficially speaking, it bears no resemblance to baseball, however these are two American sports that have evolved with a change in racial tensions and equality issues and with modern concerns over health and safety. Both have tamed considerably and allow minorities to play professionally. Free Essays on Richard III Vs. Looking For Richard

Year 11 English Comparative Essay: â€Å"Richard III† vs. â€Å"Looking for Richard† The differences between McKellen’s â€Å"Richard III† and Pacino’s â€Å"Looking for Richard† should immediately be predicted when you see the first few minutes of each film. On one hand, Richard III begins with an intense gunfight, while on the other hand, in Looking for Richard; Pacino is simply preparing to perform a play. We realise one is actually supposed to be based entirely on the story (Richard III) and the other is essentially a documentary (Looking for Richard). This is easily seen within the characters also. In Richard III, there is no â€Å"Ian McKellen†, only Richard; while in Looking for Richard there is both Pacino and Richard in a sense, as we see Al Pacino playing Richard- if you catch my drift. Al Pacino is basically a character in the movie. In terms of the presentation of the actual play â€Å"Richard III† in both films, the style and setting in which they are presented are completely different also. Both Pacino and McKellen have the same idea in a sense- to portray the play Richard III in such a fashion as to be understood by the audience. In Looking for Richard, Pacino tries to find the thoughts and opinions of regular people on Shakespeare, in order to create a movie explaining (in a simplistic fashion) what â€Å"Richard III† is about. Pacino decides to use the play’s original setting in order to do this. However, in Richard III, McKellen places the play in a setting people today understand and can relate to: a dark period identical in its appearance to World War II. In terms of their success I believe Richard III does a better job of conveying the theme and story to the audience, because unlike Looking for Richard, the movie is fluent, not cutting from a scene to street talk, etc. Also, most people find the traditional setting quite confusing, the WWII setting making far more sense. Business Strategy Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Business Strategy - Assignment Example Its close proximity to the Mexican city makes it a hotspot and many investors find it an ideal place. This is because, even though there is lots of news on criminal activities, Morelia has a good security network. In addition, it is home to Mexico’s leading learning institutions, which again make it a vital place for any investor’s growth. However, for the city to realize such a sensitive dream, both the local and national governments have to back it up because it proves to be viable for IT. From the article summarized above, the most evident concept is outsourcing. Briefly, outsourcing is a business strategy in which organizations transfer non-core activities and liabilities to external firms in order to attain a competitive advantage (Gamble, et al 115). Morelia is a city with high outsourcing capabilities since it is need of information technology. ClusterTIM is a very huge IT company in the city and has the potential to outsource. The major targets are Ecosistemas, which is digital animation company; Deipi, a renowned international IT and marketing consulting company; Konexo, a contact center; and Scio Consulting, a company credited with software development. In addition, ClusterTIM has outsourced close to 37 business entities and is in collaboration with 22 universities. This makes the dream of being an IT based city a valid dream. By outsourcing services from all the mentioned entities, Morelia, through ClusterTIM will obtain three key advantages. One, there will be an overall decrease in costs. This in return, will act as a stimulant especially for the IT sector which is a new product. Universities have fresh knowledge and thus by outsourcing their services, it will be easy to get superior talents beyond the ClusterTIM’s in house capability. In a good way, it will help eliminate idle capacity and give the chance of

Essentialism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Essentialism - Essay Example Proponents of essentialism argue that the essence of a group does not change and in situations where people believe they change, they just had not discovered those essences. For instance, in the modern day situation regarding homosexuals, the belief that homosexuals were initially heterosexuals who changed would be quashed by essentialists who argue that homosexuals had been homosexuals since they born only that their ‘homosexualness’ had not been discovered. In Newman’s book, ‘manufacturing identities’ essentialism in race is very evident especially in the censuses that were conducted in the country. for instance during censuses that were conducted before 1900, people were classified according to races depending on type of blood they had; the five categories were blacks (colored), mulatto (people with some black blood), Chinese, Indian and whites. Another example that Newman has brought forward is that the society considers men to be more aggressive and less nurturing just because they are men while women are soft and adapted by nature to nurturing just because they are women. In the modern case scenario, the situation has not been different with essentialism being evident in our daily lives. For instance, the race that an individual belongs to has been used to determine the characteristics that belong to member of that group, this is widely the reason behind cases of racial profiling in the world. For instance in the in America, violence was associated with blacks therefore if any black man was violent it was believed that the reason for him being violent is the ‘blackness’ in him. Essentialism based on gender has also been rampant in military and other employment opportunities for instance engineering where it is believed that a man will make a good engineer or a military man simply because he is a man. Essentialism based on class is also common especially in economic

Such knowledge is key to unlocking the genetic foundations of morphological development and disease† (USU, 2011, par. 2). Personally, the technical definition encompassing the endeavor appears to be complex but deems to be extremely relevant in future medical and health applications. Through the genuine interest and commitment of scientists and scholars in various sciences, remarkable contributions have continued to emerge. The area of systems biology, when searched through the Google engine was defined as â€Å"an emergent field that aims at system-level understanding of biological systems† (Systems Biology, 2003, par. 1). Vast amounts of information could be accessed and learned from this particular field of endeavor. Works Cited Systems Biology. (200 3). Systems Biology – English. Retrieved 15 June 2011. Utah Pulse. Agastein is in charge of enforcing implications of action plans that are developed to improve operation efficiency. As the resident aid supervisor it is his responsibility to ensure that employees (resident aids and resident aid manager) carry out their assigned duties. This will guaranteed that the department continues to improve and continue to provide the best quality of care to the patients. Career Path When asked what about his career path was, Agastein said it was to become a resident aid supervisor. Agastein began his career working as a combat medic in the Army National Guard. After a few years, he went to medical school to earn his bachelor degree in psychology. He began working shortly after his commissioning in the Army. After working in this position for 5 years, he began to shadow the resident manager learning the responsibilities of this position. A few months afterwards, he was promoted to resident manager. He knew that he wanted to go further so he began to learn the responsibilities as a resident aid supervisor. When the position was available he applied in hopes of getting the job. Because of his years of experience and acquired knowledge he was given the position. Although it can be overbearing at times, Agastein seems to love his job very much. Educational Requirements What are the educational requirements for the position? Agastein replied that there are some requirements for education where he had obtained a bachelor degree to get this position, which he did for psychology. While he was in medical school, he had to understand mental behaviors and theories relating to children and young teens. He had to deal with families suffering domestic violence and substance abuse. Also he had to working with people coming from socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. He needed to be able to withhold the knowledge of a resident supervisor, which got him in his current position today. Did your education adequately prepare you for your job? When asked this question Agastein said that without a doubt that his formal education in medical school had prepared him for this job. Since he had worked his way up through the ranks, from enlisted to commissioned he had seen all the aspects of leadership and he was well prepared to be put into a supervisor position. What would you say is the most important attribute for success in this position? Communication is the most important part of success in any position. Agastein said that from the janitor to the director if there is no communication everything will shut down and the business will not function. With his success in her current position he says that he has learned that throughout his entire career that communication was always what got his where he wanted to be. Another attribute that he attributes to his success is good old fashioned hard work. He says that he has always had to work hard and study a lot because good grades and success in education did not come as easy to him as it did for some of his colleagues. He had to study a lot and not sleep very much through medical school but he was able to pass in the top ten percent of his class. Hard work and dedication pays off well. Conclusion Ira Agastein a resident supervisor of Larkin Community Hospital, loves every aspect of his job and feels that he is right where he needs to be in his career path. He loves working with people and being able to make sure that they are all taken care of in a way that he says would make his grandfather proud. As a 18 year service veteran as a combat medic, he looks forward to retiring from the Army in the near future but he says he probably will never leave the health care field. He has done a lot of things in his 18 year career with the army and done other things, he has spent a lot of time on his education and says that here time in medical school was all worth it. Health care is something that he love and is very good at there is nothing else he would like to do more.

Legalizing Medical Marijuana Essay -- Legal Issues, Drugs

Medical marijuana has more advantages than it does disadvantages. The reason I have chose to support medical marijuana is for one reason. My reason is because people have fear of abuse if it is legalized but in reality people are abusing it as I write this paper. A lot of states haven't legalized marijuana because it is classified as no medical use. If no medical use is found why would some states legalize it. Marijuana affects the lungs and can cause long term lung damage. Although marijuana can affect your lungs it can benefit someone way more than it can hurt them. People have done a lot of research on this topic because it is very important. Jean Charles Pariseau is a 30 year old man with AIDS. His doctor gave him three months to live, and he was taking thirty pills a day. He only weighed eighty-two pounds. His doctor recommended medical marijuana and he felt and looked like a new man. Imagine where he would be without medical marijuana. That is right dead. Hundreds of court case s and many laws about legalizing medical marijuana have been brought up. The government has had there own medical marijuana law where some patients were allowed to receive marijuana if they met the requirements. This is a very important topic because can help someone out tremendously in the medical field and it can take care or many side effects. Smoking medical marijuana may not be the difference of life or death but it will make someone feel more relaxed and better about themselves when they are going through a rough time with there particular illness. Marijuana is the term for dried leaves, flowers, or stems of the cannabis plant, known as cannabinoids. Of these cannabinoids the â€Å"most pharmacologically active is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, also... ...! The cost of the marijuana would be up to the people who is buying it. It is grown out of the ground so if the government wanted to make profit from it they can go right ahead. I think the government should just legalize it for medical use only. The way they could do this is by having individuals buy it through their doctor or even the government themselves. I think that people should get a recommendation from their doctor first. Then they should have to run it by the health department and they should be fine. There is no way to stop the abuse of the drug, but if the government would legalize it throughout the country, people could actually get the medical uses out of it. Medical marijuana could be the answer to a lot of medical mysteries for people that don't now about it. If doctors could recommend marijuana I think it would be a lot easier on everyone.

The Impact of Women in The Iliad Essays -- Role of Women in the Trojan

Women have always been recognized for their strong influence on the actions of men. Because of his love for Delia, Samson told his secret of his power and ended up losing it. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, Lady Macbeth urged Macbeth to commit murder. More recently, Eleanor Roosevelt strongly influenced the decisions that Franklin D. Roosevelt made. Women of Homer's epic, The Iliad, were considered primary instigators of the Trojan war. The characteristics attributed to women in ancient Greek mythology may have been key to the outbreak of the war. But many ask why Homer would choose to reflect so deeply on the feminine roles of this war fought by men. Although the beginning of the war was not spoken of in The Iliad, the origin of the war is traced back to jealous goddesses. The gods and goddesses were feasting together to celebrate the marriage of Peleus and Thetis. Eris, the goddess of discord, had not been invited. She came, however, and threw among the guests a golden apple, on which was inscribed "For the fairest." Three goddesses claimed the apple. They were Hera, wif...

Bracket International Case Study Essay

Case Review The company Bracket International has grown 78 million last year with a cost of goods sold of 61 million. Currently there are three locations in Ohio, Kentucky, and South Carolina. At the Ohio and Kentucky factories are automated flow shops and South Carolina factory focuses on small custom orders and is more of a batched process. However all three locations use a bar coding labels and scanning equipment to monitor and control the flow of material. Currently there are 8,850 items scanned per day at all three factories. The Bracket International employees work 2000 hours each year with a average salary of $5,000. A company is trying to explain why switching to a radio frequency identification device (RFID) system can save money. It will help the company to be on demand operational planning and control. The system could help speed of the process of workflow. Right now the average scan time per items is ten seconds. The ten seconds does not include the employee walking to each location to scan the bar code or replace any demanaged bar code tags. An average replacement of a tag can take as much as five minutes. To purchase a radio frequency identification device for all three locations will cost around $620,000 plus for the software programming and debugging another $480,000. There could be an error with the computer unable to read the scan and the company believes the items is lost or not recorded in the Bracket International system. This could be cost error on the equipment. This system could cut down on audits because it is a readily location inventory. Bracket International has lost a job averaging around two million per year from Wolf Furniture because they were not able to react quickly enough to change in job specification and order size. The Home Depot is expressing Bracket International needs to be more flexible and wants the radio frequency identification. The Home Depot is Bracket International number one supplier. Related Information to Text After reading about Technology and Operation Management section in our text book it give me an understanding of the different type of technology out there. According to the text they do speak about radio frequency identification and explains this technology is considered hard technology. Using technology can have a huge advantage for companies whether it be from productivity improvement from technology or cost savings from technology. Discussion Questions 1) Some advantages of radio frequency identification technology are simple to install or inject the body, human intervention is required to scan a barcode, where in most application a tag can be detected with hands off, have a long reading range, has read/write memory capability, and is able to scan without having to physically scanning (Advantages of RFID 2009). Some disadvantages are difficult to read if tag is in liquid because liquid reflect the radio waves, dead area and orientation problems, security concern, ghost tags, and high cost (RFID FAQ & Tutorial 2010). How do they compare to barcode scanner? There is no line of sight requirement, the tags can stand a harsh environment, long read range, portable database, multiple tag read/write and tracking people, item, and equipment (Pandey, K., 2010). 2) There are a few paybacks for the RFID. One of the payback could be reduce the amount of time it takes an employee to search and found the barcode take ten second while the RFID system is done in 2/100ths seconds. Another payback a RFID system does not having to redo labels that could take over five minutes. The company will be able to reduce inventory because the new system will be done in real time allowing supplier to see what needs to be restocked. All these things have a cost advantages to making the switch. 3) I think the short term would be to start doing research and getting an understanding of what it really takes an employee to do their job. Job shading would give a leader an true understanding of how long it will take to do thing. After the short term happens the long term would be doing the calculating to see if the cost advances to purchasing the equipment. If the company decides to move forward with purchasing the equipment they will need to get the employees to buy into this new equipment. Reference Advantages of RFID. Essay on Enzymes Ph and Hydrogen Peroxide

Essay on Enzymes Ph and Hydrogen Peroxide Essay on Enzymes: Ph and Hydrogen Peroxide Investigating a factor that affects the rate if enzyme activity S(a) Possible Independent Variables * Concentration of substrate – different concentrations of the substrate can have an effect on the rate of reaction due to more particles in the solution therefore increasing chance of the particles colliding. * pH – different pH levels can have an effect on the rate of reaction due to the interference of bonds that hold the enzyme together in the active site. Therefore the specific substrate will not fit into the active site * Temperature - the temperature can have an effect on the rate of reaction. This is because when a substance is heated the particles will move faster therefore increasing the chance of collisions between the particles. * Concentration of enzyme – different concentrations of the enzyme can have an effect on the rate of reaction due to more particles in the solution therefore increasing the chance of the particles colliding. * Source of catalase – depending on the source of catalase you are using can also have an effect on the rate of reaction. There are many different sources of catalase such as potato, liver and spinach. Depending on which source you are using for your catalase can produce different results. I have chosen to investigate the effect of changing the concentration of enzyme on the rate of catalase activity. I have chosen this independent variable because it will be easy to monitor and change considering that the experiment is kept as fair as possible. It is also easy to measure with the equipment that is available to us. Hypothesis I predict using the information researched that the rate of reaction for the enzyme will be directly proportional to the enzyme concentration. I think the optimum rate of reaction will depend on the enzyme concentration. This is because enzymes can only react with a specific amount of substrate at a given amount of time. Therefore if you were to decrease the amount of enzyme concentration then the reaction would take longer. This is due to the fact that there will not enough particles to react with the substrate. For example if I put in 2g of potato then the reaction will be slower than if I put in 20g, which will then react faster. Variables Independent Concentration of enzyme Dependent Volume of oxygen (cm3) Control * Volume of hydrogen peroxide (cm3) * Volume of pH buffer solution (cm3) * Temperature of water in the tray * Time (seconds) It is important that all the control variables of the experiment are kept the same. This is to ensure that all of the results are accurate and reliable, and that any changes to the enzyme are caused by the change of the concentration of enzyme and no other factors. This will help to make the experiment a fair test. S(b) Equipment list * Potatoes – This is the source of the catalase enzyme. It is important that each sample is taken from the same potato to avoid any variation in catalase levels due to different potatoes. We will be using diced potatoes. This will make it easier to adjust when measuring for the concentration. It will also break open the cells, which releases more enzyme and will speed up the rate of reaction. * Hydrogen Peroxide – This is the solution we will be using as the substrate for the catalase. The volume of solution we use will be the same each time. * Safety Goggles and Lab Coats – this is to make sure that we protects our eyes and clothes from the hydrogen peroxide and the pH buffers. This is because hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent. * Buffer Solutions – These are the pH buffers that we will be using. We will be using the level 7 buffer solutions each time. * Boiling Tubes – The size and depth of the boiling tube will be kept the same so that the volume of solution will not vary each time we do the experiment. * Delivery Tube – The delivery tube will be used to transfer the oxygen in to the measuring cylinder

Mao Tse-Tung biography essays

Mao Tse-Tung biography essays Mao Tse-Tung was born in Hunan 1893 into a family a poor peasants who gradually risen to the status of middle class then on to rich peasants and gained merchants. He then found himself in a contradictory position. Maos poor clothes placed him in a position naturally inferior to that of his fellow classmates. This early experience may well have cause in him an unclear attitude toward social problems. Mao had a rebellious attitude because he has been treated as a low-grade person. But he also had a feeling of unity with those of the same level of power as him. Like most young Chinese at his time was exposed to a variety of modernization influences. When he was thirteen he read Warnings to the seemingly prosperous Age and he was really influenced by the book. This was a request for freedom for private enterprise.Mao loved to read Chinese literature. WMhile a student in higher primary school he read on of the books by Liang Chi-chao and a book about Kang Yu- wei and the reform movement. These two great reformers Kang and Liang became his models. If a person were to characterize Maos mind and personality and behavior it would have to be his military strength, great courage and how he is on nationalism. Mao learned more of the importance in military power from the six month he spent in the anti-Manchu army after the revolution of October 1911. Mao is the founder and first leader of the Chinese communist party. This Chinese communist party worked together to reunite China. After the bloody communist fight with nationalist Chiang Kai-shek in 1927 Mao established a base in southern Kiangsi province. He started to put into practice his ideas into practice a revolutionary peasantry by a guerrilla was against the government. Mao proclaimed the people of China on October 1st, 1949.Instead of continuing the five year plan Mao came up with two procedures; The great leap forward a wide campaign to org...

What They Are and How They Were Formed

What They Are and How They Were Formed The word pluvial is Latin for the word rain; therefore, a pluvial lake is often thought of as a formerly large lake created by excessive rain paired with little evaporation. In geography though, the presence of an ancient pluvial lake or its remnants represents a period when the worlds climate was much different from present-day conditions. Historically, such shifts changed arid areas into places with extremely wet conditions. There are also present-day pluvial lakes that show the importance of various weather patterns to a location. In addition to being referred to as pluvial lakes, ancient lakes associated with former wet periods are sometimes put into the category of paleolakes. Formation of Pluvial Lakes The study of pluvial lakes today is mostly tied to that of ice ages and glaciation as the ancient lakes have left distinct landform features. The most prominent and well studied of these lakes are usually related to the last glacial period as this is when they are thought to have formed. Most of these lakes formed in arid locations where there was initially not enough rain and mountain snow to establish a drainage system with rivers and lakes. As the climate then cooled with the onset of climate change, these dry locations turned wet because of different air flows caused by the large continental ice sheets and their weather patterns. With more precipitation, stream runoff increased and began to fill the basins in the formerly dry areas. Over time, as more water became available with the increased moisture, the lakes enlarged and spread across places with lower elevations creating enormous pluvial lakes. Shrinking of Pluvial Lakes Just as pluvial lakes are created by climate fluctuations, they are also destroyed by them over time. For example, as the Holocene epoch began after the last glaciation temperatures around the world rose. As a result, the continental ice sheets melted, again causing a shift in world weather patterns and making the newly wet areas once again arid. This period of little precipitation caused the pluvial lakes to experience a drop in their water levels. Such lakes are usually endorheic, meaning they are a closed drainage basin that retains precipitation and its runoff but it does not have a drainage outlet. Therefore without a sophisticated drainage system and no incoming water, the lakes began to gradually evaporate in the dry, warm conditions usually found in their locations. Â   Some of Today’s Pluvial Lakes Though the most famous of todays pluvial lakes are significantly smaller than they used to be because of the lack of precipitation, their remnants are important aspects of many landscapes around the world. The United States Great Basin area is famous for having the remains of two large pluvial lakes Lakes Bonneville and Lahontan. Lake Bonneville (map of former Lake Bonneville) once covered nearly all of Utah as well as portions of Idaho and Nevada. It formed about 32,000 years ago and lasted until approximately 16,800 years ago. Lake Bonnevilles demise came with reduced precipitation and evaporation, but most of its water was lost as it overflowed through Red Rock Pass in Idaho after the Bear River was diverted to Lake Bonneville following lava flows in the area. However, as time passed and little rain fell into what remained of the lake, it continued to shrink. The Great Salt Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats are the largest remaining portions of Lake Bonneville today. Lake Lahontan (map of former Lake Lahontan) is a pluvial lake that covered nearly all of northwestern Nevada as well as parts of northeastern California and southern Oregon. At its peak about 12,700 years ago, it covered approximately 8,500 square miles (22,000 square kilometers). Like Lake Bonneville, Lake Lahontans waters gradually began to evaporate resulting in a drop in lake level over time. Today, the only remaining lakes are Pyramid Lake and Walker Lake, both of which are located in Nevada. The rest of the lake’s remnants consist of dry playas and rock formations where the ancient shoreline was. In addition to these ancient pluvial lakes, several lakes still exist around the world today and are dependent on an areas precipitation patterns. Lake Eyre in South Australia is one. During the dry season portions of the Eyre Basin are dry playas but when the rainy season begins the nearby rivers flow to the basin, increasing the lake’s size and depth. This is dependent though on the seasonal fluctuations of the monsoon and some years the lake can be much larger and deeper than others. Todays pluvial lakes represent the importance of precipitation patterns and the availability of water for a locale; whereas the remains of ancient lakes show how a shift in such patterns can alter an area. Regardless of whether or not a pluvial lake is ancient or still existing today though, they are important components of an area’s landscape and will remain so as long as they continue to form and later disappear.

Knowledge Worker Paper-Terence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Knowledge Worker Paper-Terence - Essay Example The comparison includes their responsibilities, function, and their role. Increasingly, the paper defines my experience at Syndicate Marketing Company and how the company reflected the function of knowledge workers (Jemielniak, 2012). Knowledge workers are also referred to as free agents, human capital, or even the knowledge entrepreneurs. They constitute one of the fastest rising sectors of the workforce in the globe. The concept was first introduced by Peter Drucker in 1959, who defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who make use of their analytical knowledge and theoretical knowledge from their formal education to innovate services and products. According to Peter Drucker, knowledge is contagious and grows like an organism. The knowledge itself needs to be served and assimilated but not merely stored. The knowledge innovation created the knowledge management, which underwent revolution in 1990 to support the workers to come up processes and standard tools. Focusing on knowledge is declared as one of the values for human social and economic development. Initially, wealth was measured in terms of land. During the second wave, wealth was measured in terms of capital ownership like factories. Increasingly , the ability to own wealth was measured at the rate in which a person owns knowledge and how he employs the knowledge in creating new goods and services. The innovation was reflected on the security and cost on the product. In the knowledge era, 2 per cent of working population works on land, 10 per cent of them work on industries, while the 78 per cent are knowledge workers. The knowledge worker acquires, manipulates, interprets, and applies information to carry out complex, unpredictable, and multidisciplinary work (Davenport, 2005). The core of a firm is characterized by the knowledge workers. The firms use the knowledge, judgment,
